So you want to learn bass guitar but don’t have much cash to buy an instrument. What now? Well, no problem! This article will give you tips on what to look for when you are buying on a tight budget.
What is your budget?
The first thing you will need to do is work out how much you can spend. The cheapest starter packages cost around $350. With these, you get the bass guitar, an amp, a lead and picks. The bad news with these budget packages is that they are not always very good. I would suggest you get advice from someone who already plays bass or a music teacher before you go out and spend your money on one of these.
Consider to learn bass guitar on a second hand instrument
The other thing to consider is whether you could settle for a second hand instrument. If so, browse the classifieds section of your local newspaper to get an idea of how much it will cost you for a new and a used bass. Also, go to music shops in your area and try a few bass guitars. This will give you a better idea of how much you should pay for a new and a used bass guitar. I would also ask one of our teachers if they know of anyone who is interested in selling their bass guitar. Sometimes, we have students wanting to sell their instruments to continue to learn bass guitar on a better quality instrument. Thus, you maybe be able to pick up a good bass at a good price.
There’s always ebay
Ebay is another good option to buy an instrument on a budget. I would however recommend that you buy a bass that you can go and collect it yourself at the address. Maybe it is just me. However, I worry that if the bass is sent by freight, it may arrive at my home damaged.
Bring someone along to help you inspect the bass
When you have decided on a bass guitar you want to buy, bring along someone who plays bass so that they can check out the instrument before you buy it. A few things to consider are:
- Comfort of the freboard and neck on your hands
- Sound quality: Are you happy with the sound of the instrument. Can you hear any buzzing that does not sound right?
- The action: is the distance between the fretboard and strings too big? If so, it will make it hard for you to press down on the strings.
- Does the instrument stay in tune?
- If you already own an amplifier, bring it along so that you can hear how this bass will sound through your amp.
Popular companies that make budget bass guitars are Fender and Epiphone.
