The piano is a very durable instrument. It can last approximately 40 years and its value does not depreciate much over time. On an average, a piano costs more than other instruments. However, the financial investment is worth it because of its long lifespan. This article will provide with some piano buying tips to ensure you end up buying a piano you are happy with.
The first thing you need to do is determine whether you are going to buy a new one or if you are fine with a second hand piano. Popular piano brands include Steinway and Sons, Kawai and Yamaha. I strongly recommend that you do not buy a piano online. You need to see and hear what you are buying and see if you like it. Browse the classifieds section of your local paper for second hand pianos. This will give you an idea of how much new and used pianos cost.
Look the yellow pages to find retailers near you. As mentioned before, our teachers can inform you of where the closest music shops are to where you live.
Besides looking at your local newspaper and yellow pages, I recommend that you look on ebay for what is available there. If purchasing on ebay, I would recommend not travelling too far from the area you live in. The reason for this is that you don’t want to travel far only to find that the piano you were looking at was not what you expected. Gumtree is also another great website to look for pianos. In addition, consider local community Facebook groups. You will sometimes even find people posting on these sites wanting to give pianos away for all sorts of reasons.
When you have found a piano that you want to buy, bring along a pianist or one of our piano instructors to the music shop. They can help inspect the instrument before you buy it.
