The Rode Stereo VideoMic Pro Rycote has been our latest purchase at Do Re Mi Studios to record our music lessons tutorials. Prior to purchasing it, I looked at several similar models and chose this one for the reasons explained in this article.
The first reason for choosing this microphone was that it offers a high quality stereo option for recording music. This was a priority. I also liked the fact that it is compact and lightweight. This makes it suitable for use with our Canon 6D DSLR and to put it on a microphone stand without worrying about it falling over.
The photo below shows our new Rode Stereo VideoMic pro mounted on a microphone stand. We use a VC1 Stereo 3.5mm extension cable to connect it to our DSLR camera.

Integrated Rycote Lyre Shock Mount
The Stereo VideoMic Pro features an integrated Rycote® Lyre® based shock mounting system that separates the mic capsule and electronics from its mount. This is great as it minimises handling noise and other vibrations. The lyre is made of thermoplastic that will not wear out or snap.
Cardioid Condenser Capsules
Another of the great features of this mic is the cardioid condenser capsules with an X/Y stereo configuration. This allows you to produce recordings with a wide stereo image and low floor noise.
Equalisation Control And High Pass Filter
The Rode Stereo VideoMic Pro Rycote features a switch to allow you to record at -10db. This reduces the microphone’s sensitivity and makes it suitable for recording loud sounds such as a live concert. We use the +20dB level boost with our DSLR camera. It provides a better quality signal with increased recording clarity.
The mic also features a high-pass filter at 75 Hz that will minimise unwanted noise such traffic and air conditioning units. The photo below shows the microphone’s controls described above.

Summary
The Rode Stereo VideoMic Pro is highly recommended by us at Do Re Mi Studios. It is very user-friendly and the results we have produced are of a very high quality.
In Australia, this mic retails between $250-$320 and is worth every cent. It is a fantastic choice for a beginner without breaking the budget. It gets a 5 star rating from us at Do Re Mi Studios.
