Over the years, I have played with many great musicians that never had guitar tuition. They were able to play everything from punk rock to jazz and were very good! They knew all the chords and could improvise well on the guitar without even knowing what scales they were playing! They just knew what worked and sounded good simply by ear.
The closest thing they came to guitar lessons was reading guitar magazines with lessons/articles on their pages. The same can also be said about many famous guitarists such as Jimmy Page and Jimmy Hendrix who were self taught and needless to say brilliant! So, why should you take lessons when you could just teach yourself? Here are some key points to consider:
- Guitar tuition can help speed up your progress. In other words, what might have taken you months to figure out on your own, may only take a few days to learn when a guitar teacher shows you. For example, many self taught guitarists can develop a clumsy and messy sound when they do their guitar solos. This is often due to not spending enough time practicing scales correctly to develop good technique. A good teacher can help resolve this issue.
- Guitar teachers can point out what you are doing incorrect and show you a better way for how to play something. Suddenly something that seems impossible to play becomes easy due to attending guitar lessons.
- Guitar tuition can keep you motivated when you are feeling discouraged or unmotivated. A good teacher can give you material to learn that you may not have been aware of, broadening your horizons.
- Guitar tuition from trained teachers will give you the tools necessary for continued growth, especially musical literacy.
