The drums and the bass are the backbone of a band and its music. So, no more jokes about drummers! This blog entry is an introductory guide for those interested in learning how to play drums. It covers key points that are discussed in detail in our drum lessons at Do Re Mi Studios. So here we go:

Tip #1: Seating Position

Make sure you are in a comfortable position before you start playing. Experiment with your drumkit set-up to see what works for you. Be sure that you are able to reach the tom-toms and cymbals.

Before you start each of your drum lessons with any of our drum teachers, he/she will adjust the drumkit at the school to suit your height.

Tip #2: Drum Sticks

When you attend drum lessons with our drum teachers, they will show you the two types of drumsticks available:

  1. Nylon tip
  2. Wooden tip

Try both nylon and wooden tip. They each have a different sound quality. For example, nylon tip sticks sound brighter especially when playing on the cymbals. We will have these available for you to try when you come to your drum lessons with our teachers.

Be sure that your sticks are of the same length, weight and straightness. For a beginner, a good pair of sticks would be a size 7A (marked on the side of the stick). As you progress try different sizes and see what suits you. Two of the most popular drumstick brands are Vic Firth and Promark.

Tip #3: Holding the sticks

There are two ways of holding the sticks. They are:

  1. The traditional grip- used mostly by jazz, military and orchestral drummers
  2. The matched grip- used by rock drummers.

The correct way to hold the sticks will be demonstrated by your teacher when you attend the first of your drum lessons.

Tip #4: Practice, practice and practice

This is the only way you will become a good drummer. It is also important to develop a good practice plan so that you manage your practicing time well.

Let our teachers help you achieve your full potential with our drum lessons!
