Sit down at a piano for the first time and it’s a wall of identical white keys. Where do you even start? Learning how to find C and F on the piano is a good place to begin.
The black keys are your map. They come in little groups of twos and threes, which makes it much easier to find your way around the keyboard.
We’ll start with two notes: C and F.

How to Find C
Look for a group of two black keys. Now find the white key immediately to the left of that pair. That’s C.
Once you’ve found one C, you’ve found them all. The same pattern repeats up and down the whole keyboard. So every time you spot a pair of black keys, the white key to its left is another C. If you’re sitting at your piano, pick out a few now.
Find a C near one end of the keyboard, then look further along and find another one. Notice how the same group of two black keys gives you the same starting point each time. You’re not memorising where one C happens to be. You are learning to recognise C anywhere on the keyboard.
How to Find F
Now look for a group of three black keys. The white key just to the left of the three is F.
The pattern repeats all the way along. So every group of three black keys has an F on its left.
Try finding one F, then another further along the keyboard. Once you start noticing the groups of three, you’ll be able to find F without searching through all the white keys.
A Simple Way to Remember Them
If it helps to keep it short and sweet, here’s all you need:
- C sits just left of 2 black keys.
- F sits just left of 3 black keys.
Once this feels natural, finding the other notes gets a whole lot easier. C and F give you useful landmarks for working out the rest of the notes on the keyboard.
If you’re sitting at a piano while reading this, give yourself a little test. Find three different C notes, then three different F notes. You don’t need to rush. Just look for the groups of two and three black keys and use them to find C and F.
Why Start With C and F?
Think of C and F as landmarks, like knowing the corner shop and the train station when you’re getting to know a new suburb. Once you know where C and F are, your teacher can use them to help you learn scales, chords, melodies and the rest of the keyboard.
You won’t be hunting for these notes forever. Give it a little time and your eyes will start finding them on their own. You’ll glance at the keys and just know.
